A basic granny square is worked in the round, making clusters of three double crochet stitches. In the corners, you chain one between two clusters in the same space. There are many versions on the granny square, this version is the traditional method.
How to Make a Basic Granny Square
To start, chain 3 and slip stitch into the first chain to make a circle or work into a Magic Ring.
Chain 3 (chain counts as first double crochet in the cluster), then work 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, sl st into the top of chain 3.
When making a granny square, you work the stitches into the space between the double crochet clusters. Not into the top of the stitches.
To start the next row, ch3, work 2 dc into the same space. Then make 3 dc in the next space.
When you are working in a corner, crochet 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc all in the same space. The corners are the increase in each round of the square.
When you get to the end, make another cluster of three in the same space as you started to complete the corner. Then chain one and slip stitch into the top of the chain three.
