The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Crochet Beanie Sizes (with Easy Chart)
So you’ve just learned how to crochet – Yay!
Now you’re ready to make your first beanie…
But wait – how big should it be? Should you measure the head? Guess? Is there a pattern for that?
Don’t worry – I’ve got you covered. Whether you’re making a cozy hat for a baby, toddler, teen, or adult, this beginner-friendly guide will walk you through exactly how to size a crochet beanie without the stress.
Why Beanie Sizing Matters
Beanies stretch, but a well-sized one will feel just right, not too tight, not sliding off. Crocheting the perfect fit comes down to two simple things: head size and hat height.
Standard Crochet Beanie Sizes Chart
Age/Size Head Circumference | Hat Crown Width | Hat Height |
Preemie: 12″-13″ Newborn to 3 months: 13″-14″ 3 to 6 months: 14″ – 15″ 6 to 12 months: 15.5″ – 16″ 12 to 24 months: 16.5″ – 18″ Toddler: 18″ – 19″ Child: 19″ – 21″ Teen/Adult Small: 21″ Adult Medium: 22″ Adult Large: 23″ Adult XL: 24″ | 3″ – 3.5″ 4″ – 4.5″ 5″ 5.25″ 5.5″ – 6″ 6″ 6.5″ 6.5″ – 7″ 7″ – 7.25″ 7.5″ 8″ | 4″ 5″ – 5.5″ 6″ 6.25″ 6.5″ – 7″ 7″ – 7.5″ 7.5″ – 8″ 8″ 8.5″ 9″ 9″ – 9.5″ |
💡Pro Tip: Beanies usually fit best when they’re 1-2” smaller than the actual head size
(This is called “negative ease”).
How to Measure the Head (if You Can)
If you’re gifting or making for yourself, measuring the head is ideal:
- Wrap a flexible measuring tape around the forehead and the widest part of the head.
- For height, measure from the crown to just above the eyebrows.
But don’t worry if you can’t – the chart above works great for most standard sizes.
Choosing the Right Yarn & Stitch
If you’re a beginner, I recommend:
- Yarn: Medium #4 worsted weight (soft acrylic or cotton blend).
- Hook: 5 mm (H/8) or whatever your pattern calls for.
- Stitches: Half double crochet (hdc) or double crochet (dc) for a stretchy, cozy finish
