What You Really Need to Start Crocheting
When you’re just starting out, it’s easy to think you need to buy everything in the craft aisle.
But here’s the truth: you don’t need a fancy setup, a ton of tools, or expensive yarn to learn to crochet. In fact, you can get started with just a few affordable items.
In this post, I’ll walk you through the crochet must-haves for beginners — and what can wait until later.
The Essentials (Just 5 Things!)
Here’s all you actually need to get started:
(As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.)
- One crochet hook
- Size H/8 (5.0 mm) is a great starter size.
- Look for ergonomic handles if you have wrist or hand pain.
- One skein of medium-weight yarn (Weight 4)
- Choose a light-colored yarn (so you can see your stitches)
- Avoid fluffy, dark, or textured yarns for now.
- Small scissors or snips
- You just need something to cut the yarn – nothing fancy.
- Yarn or tapestry needle
- For weaving in your yarn ends at the end of a project.
- Beginner-friendly pattern or tutorial
- Like my free step-by-step video course!
That’s it! You don’t need 12 hooks, a yarn winder, or stitch counters (yet).
Nice-to-Haves (But Not Required Yet)
Once you’ve made your first few projects, you might want to add:
- A full hook set (for different yarn sizes)
- Stitch markers (or just use bobby pins!)
- Project bag or yarn basket
- Measuring tape
- Hook case or pouch
These things are helpful, but not necessary when you’re brand new.
What NOT to Spend Money On (Right Away)
As a beginner, skip:
- Expensive luxury yarn (learn on budget-friendly yarn first)
- Advanced tools like blocking mats or ball winders
- Pattern books or kits with unfamiliar terms
Start small. Grow your tool kit as your skills grow.
