Ways Crochet Can Benefit Your Mental Health
Crochet is a fun hobby that you can do some cool things with, like make your self a cozy scarf. It is so much more than that; crocheting is good for you too! Crocheting has many health benefits, such as relaxation, relieving depression, and reducing memory loss. Here are seven ways crochet can benefit your mental health…
1. Depression
Crocheting can help relieve depression. When you do something you enjoy, the body releases Serotonin and Dopamine. Both of these chemicals are proven to be natural anti-depressants.
A study in The British Journal of Occupational Therapy found that 80% of respondents with depression felt happier after crocheting/knitting.

2. Stress
Stress can lead to many health issues, such as heart failure and migraine headaches. You can use crochet to relax your mind. Crochet has a calming effect because you have to focus on each stitch and the repetitive movement of your hands. Crocheting keeps your mind busy and relaxes your body. Allowing you to let go of the things that are causing stress.
3. Insomnia
Not being able to sleep when you are tired can be so frustrating. Next time try unwinding by working on a crochet project. The repetition of the stitches is similar to meditation. It can be enough to relax your mind and body so you can fall asleep.
4. Anxiety
Crocheting can calm anxiety by keeping your mind focused and your hands moving. Counting the crochet stitches on your project takes your mind off of what was making you feel anxious. Next time you are feeling anxious, grab some yarn and a hook and allow your mind to refocus.
5. Memory Loss
As the old saying goes, “Use It or Lose It.” Learning crochet or a new stitch or even working through a crochet pattern all keep your brain active. There have been many studies that show crocheting can reduce both Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The Mayo Clinic completed a study that showed crocheting/knitting could reduce Dementia by 50%.
6. Confidence
Increase your confidence by completing a crochet project. Finishing a crochet piece gives you a sense of accomplishment, which is a fulfilling feeling. “Yes, I made that!”. No matter if this project was made for you as a gift or to sell, you are bound to receive compliments on your craft. Hearing compliments from others is always good for a self-esteem boost.
7. Community
Many mental health issues can make you feel alone and lead us to isolate ourselves. Building a community of support around you is essential. There are plenty of ways to meet new people in the crochet community. Here are a few ideas:
- Online Crochet Communities
- Crochet Lessons
- Crochet Group Meetings
- Craft Shows
- Yarn Shops/Craft Stores
- Social Media
The crochet community is very welcoming, saying hello and ask a question about yarn, and you’re in!
