Make a Beanie that Fits!
One of the most frustrating things for a crochet beginner is figuring out beanie sizes. It can be so disappointing to complete a project and not have it fit correctly. Please don’t fret; I have a few tips in this crochet size guide that will help…
How to make sure your crochet beanie is the right size.

- Preemie: 12″-13″
- Newborn to 3 Months: 13″-14″

Let’s make a beanie!
You can use any yarn, hook size, and stitch. I’m using half double crochet stitches with an 8mm hook and Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn in Aspen Tweed for this beanie.
I’m making this beanie for myself; my head circumference measures 22″. In the beanie size guide above, that equals a medium adult. That lets me know that the crown of my beanie needs to be 7″-7.25″ in width.
Making The Beanie Crown
Round 1: Start with a Magic Circle, chain, even number of stitches – 6, 8, 10, or 12. whichever works best for the stitch and yarn you are using. Join with slip stitch in the first stitch made.
My Beanie: Make a magic circle, ch2, 6 hdc in magic circle. Join with slst
Round 2: ch, 2sts in each st around, join with a slip stitch.
My Beanie: ch2, 2hdc in each st around. Join with slst.
Round 3: ch, 2 stitches in the first stitch, 1 stitch in the next, *2 stitches in the next stitch, 1 stitch in the next, repeat from * around, join with a slip stitch.
Round 4: ch, 2 Stitches in the first stitch, 1 stitch in the next 2 stitches, * 2 stitches, 1 stitch in next two, repeat from * around, join with a slip stitch.
Continue working increase rounds until the crown measures the width you need.
My Beanie:
Round 3: ch2, 2hdc in the first st, 1hdc in the next st, *2hdc in the next st, 1hdc, repeat from * around, join with slst.
Round 4: ch2, 2hdc in the first st, 1hdc in the next 2sts, *2hdc, 1hdc in the next 2sts, repeat from * around, join with slst.
Round 5: 2hdc, 1hdc in the next 3sts
Round 6: 2hdc, 1hdc in the next 4sts
Round 7: 2hdc, 1hdc in the next 5sts
Beanie Length
Working the length is the easy part; stop working increases. Work one stitch in each stitch around for each row until the size of the beanie is correct.
My beanie length needs to be 8.5″ long, to be the right size.
My Beanie:
Round 8 – 14: ch2, 1hdc in st around, join with slst.
Measure your beanie from the top center down to the edge to make sure it’s long enough.
The beanie is complete, and it fits!
I know you’ll be making many beanies now that you know these simple tricks to get the fit right.
