The Chain stitch is easy to do and one of the most used stitches in crochet. It is used as a foundation to work other stitches into to create your project.

Step 1: Wrap the yarn over the hook

Step 2: Pull a loop through the loop on your hook

Step 3: Repeat steps 1 and 2, until you have the number of chains required.

Parts of a Foundation Chain

The foundation chain is made up of three loops. The two on the top that make a (V) shape are the top and bottom loops. On the back of the chain there is a third loop called the back bump.

Turning Chains

Chain Stitches are also used to create turning chains. The purpose of the turning chain is to bring your yarn to the height necessary to work the first stitch of each additional row.

The number of chain stitches you make in the turning chain depends on what the next stitch in the row is because some stitches are taller than others.
