First, let me say there is no wrong way to hold a hook! There are several modifications to holding a crochet hook, you will find what is most comfortable for you.
These are the two most common ways to hold the crochet hook.

Making a Slip Knot
The slip knot is how you attach the yarn to your hook so you can start crocheting. Almost every piece of crochet begins with a slip knot.
Holding the Yarn
There are also several ways to hold the yarn, and again you will find what works best for you. Here are two examples of the most common holds.

Yarn Over (yo)
Wrapping the yarn over your crochet hook is called a yarn over. It is an essential step to every stitch in crocheting.
Yarn overs can be used before and after you insert the hook into a stitch. Some Stitches require you to yarn over two or more times.
Make a slip knot.
Wrap the working yarn around the hook, bring the yarn up from behind the hook.
The yarn is positioned between the slip knot and the throat of the hook.
